According to EBIZDIR, California tenant-landlord law is a set of regulations that govern the relationship between tenants and landlords. These laws are designed to protect the rights of both parties, ensure fair housing practices, and ensure safe, habitable living environments. The California Residential Landlord and Tenant Act (RLTA) is the primary source of tenant-landlord law in California. Under this act, tenants have certain rights including the right to a safe, habitable living environment; the right to be free from discrimination; the right to due process if facing eviction; and the right to receive written notice of any changes in rental terms or conditions. Landlords must also follow certain obligations including making necessary repairs in a timely manner, providing access to running water, heat and electricity as well as other essential services. They must also provide sufficient notice before entering a tenant’s premises (at least 24 hours). When it comes time for a tenant to move out, landlords must return all deposits within 21 days of their departure.
