Delaware State Overview
It was an Englishman who not only gave his name to a bay, a river and an Indian tribe. Thomas West the third, Baron De La Warr (July 9, 1577 – June 7, 1618), was also the namesake for the state of Delaware. The state, which bears the official nickname “The First State”, was the first of the 13 English colonies to sign the United States Constitution on December 7, 1787.
The area was originally colonized in the 16th century by Dutch merchants who settled in the area of what is now Lewes. Because Lewes was the first town in the state that first ratified the constitution, the town is now known as “The first town in the first state”.
With a per capita income of approximately $35,000, this second smallest state ranks 9th on the national list.
The main agricultural products are poultry, soybeans, corn and dairy products.
Ready-to-eat food, chemical and automotive industries, paper products, and rubber and plastic products are the state’s main industries.
